I first stumbled across the story of Albert Göring on Reddit, of all places, and was immediately struck by the strange contradiction at its heart: the brother of one of Nazi Germany's most powerful men was quietly risking his life to undermine the regime. What started as a late-night internet rabbit hole turned into years of research, including a trip to Germany. I was drawn to the moral complexity of his story, particularly what it means to stand against your own family and the society around you when doing the right thing comes at a tremendous personal cost. It's one of those stories that sounds too improbable to be true, which is probably why I wanted to write it.
