Mother Lode grew out of extensive research into the California Gold Rush, a period I've always found fascinating as a native Californian. In just a few years, California transformed from a remote frontier into a crossroads of the world, drawing people from China, Mexico, Europe, South America, and across the United States, all chasing the promise of a better life. It was a chaotic collision of cultures, ambitions, and competing ideas about who had a right to the land and its riches. I wanted to explore that extraordinary moment in California's history through a sprawling ensemble of characters, mixing historical realities with the darker folklore and supernatural mysteries of the Sierra Nevada.
